Give Your Weight Loss Program a Boost with Pharmacotherapy

When you wake up in the morning and go to the gym, or when you wake up in the morning and go to the lake, you always see a bunch of people exercising. Now, some of these individuals are at the gym or some of these individuals are running around the lake because they honestly enjoy getting out and exercising. However, the vast majority of these individuals are exercising because they are either trying to lose weight or they are worried about regaining weight that they lost.

Anyone who has gone through the difficult process of losing weight and keeping it off can tell you that it is not easy. For this reason, the vast majority of people who actually lose weight find themselves putting all that fat back on.

Modern science recognizes how difficult it is for a person to stick to a diet. For this reason, there are a lot of medical treatments that are aimed at helping obese individuals minimize their appetite and increase the rate at which their body burns through calories. Pharmacotherapy can also be used to give your weight loss program a boost.

The need for medical intervention to help individuals lose weight is underscored when you look at how prevalent obesity has become in the United States. As recently as 2004, it is said that more than 30 percent of people in the United States were obese. Obesity leads to a whole range of chronic illnesses including diabetes, sleep apnea and heart problems.

However, if an individual is able to lose a sufficient amount of weight, they drastically reduce their chances of becoming victim to these serious health problems. Pharmacotherapy can help a person accomplish this.

Some people mistakenly believe that obese individuals do not lose weight simply because they overeat. This is an oversimplification of the problem. While it is true that losing weight, maintaining weight or gaining weight is a matter of burning more calories than you consume, the balance between consumption and calorie burn is affected by a lot of internal factors. Some of these factors a person cannot regulate or control on their own. This is where pharmacotherapy comes into the picture.

Some weight loss drugs are designed to minimize energy intake. They do this by suppressing a person’s appetite or altering the way that their body absorbs the calories or the fat that they eat. Another option is to increase thermogenesis. Some medications do this by increasing energy expenditure, making a person more prone to burn the calories they eat faster.

Of course, popping a pill is not enough. If an individual is going to lose weight for the long haul, they are going to need to couple pharmacotherapy with weight loss maintenance, diet, changing their behavior and an exercise program.

When a person is able to accomplish all of these things, they are left with a sense of satisfaction. Usually, once a person can get to their ideal weight, they are able to maintain it through diet and exercise.
