Benefits of Getting a Seasonal Flu Shot

While it might not be your favorite doctor’s appointment to make, there are important benefits to getting a seasonal flu shot every year. The fact is, the flu shot is the single best way to protect yourself from the virus. It is beneficial to know why you should make the annual flu vaccine a priority as the season for sneezing approaches.

1. It Reduces Your Chances of Contracting the Flu Virus by up to 60 Percent

While you may think that the flu is just a minor inconvenience, the disease can be quite dangerous. In fact, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that approximately 50,000 people have died from the flu since 1976. Between 80 and 90 percent of these deaths were among the elderly.

2. It’s the Neighborly Thing to Do

Speaking of the elderly, not only does getting vaccinated against the flu keep you from getting sick, but it also prevents you from spreading the virus to those around you. That means it is especially important to get vaccinated if you come in frequent contact with people who are at high risk, including young children, the elderly and those who are ill.

3. It Can Limit Symptoms and Reduce the Risk for Complications

While the flu vaccine is not a guarantee against getting the flu, it does help to ensure that your symptoms will be milder and resolve more quickly if you do get sick after getting the shot. In addition, you are less likely to develop dangerous consequences, like pneumonia, if you’ve been vaccinated.

4. You’ll Be Protected Against the Newest Strains of the Virus

Even if you’ve been vaccinated in the past, it’s important to get an annual flu vaccine. That’s because each year, a new vaccine is developed to combat the strains of the virus that are most commonly diagnosed. In addition, your body’s immune response to the vaccination declines over time, rendering it less effective.

The seasonal flu shot becomes available as early as possible before the flu season each year, typically in September or October. Because it usually takes about two weeks to become fully effective, you should get the vaccine right away once it is in stock. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that everyone older than 6 months of age should receive a seasonal flu shot, especially pregnant women, older adults, children younger than age 8 and anyone with a chronic medical condition.
