Vitamin D Injections: Who Is a Candidate?

Vitamin D Injections

Vitamin D is one of the essential minerals that is not produced by the body itself. It is important for the regulation of phosphorus and calcium in the body. People need to acquire Vitamin D for strong bones and typically do so by exposure to sunlight. It only takes casual exposure to sunlight to store up levels of Vitamin D in the fat to reserve for days when it is overcast or you are stuck indoors. Nevertheless, Vitamin D deficiency is very common due to the trend of people avoiding sunlight even in warm climates from fears of premature aging and cancer. Vitamin D injections may be able to give you the boost you need to feel better.

Americans who live in northern states and Canadians are at the highest risk for Vitamin D deficiencies. Consuming dairy, fortified foods, and taking Vitamin D supplements are the most common alternatives to sunlight. However, as people age, it may become more difficult to absorb Vitamin D. Vitamin D needs to be converted by the liver and kidneys to be useful. Some people have fewer receptors in their skin to convert the UVB rays of sunlight into Vitamin D. Also consider that people who have darker skin are more resistant to sunlight and require more time in the sun to create the same levels.

Vitamin D Injections

Vitamin D injections are typically available in Vitamin D2 or Vitamin D3 subtypes. Vitamin D3 is the natural form of the vitamin that is produced by the body called cholecalciferol. Vitamin D2 may bind with receptors and block absorption according to some opinions. Vitamin D2 is called ergocalciferol and is produced by exposing yeast bacteria to UV radiation. Vitamin D2 is typically used to fortify foods and to market cheap supplemental multivitamin formulas. Vitamin D3 is three times as potent.

Who Is a Candidate for Vitamin D Injections?

If you are dark-skinned, undergo kidney dialysis, or you are otherwise at risk for Vitamin D deficiency, it is a good idea to get tested. You may think that your levels are fine because you drink a lot of dairy that suggests that you are getting 100% daily values. However, it is more difficult to absorb sufficient amounts if you have a higher body mass. There is little replacement for hours of UV exposure which can cause cancer, sunburn, and premature aging. People who work indoors or live in states like Vermont that are always rainy and overcast suffer from higher rates of Vitamin D deficiency. Vitamin D3 injections are the recommended treatment because they quickly restore Vitamin D levels and bypass the digestive system to overcome absorption hurdles.

Vitamin D injections are not limited to strengthening bones but have other benefits as well. They may improve mood, reduce anxiety, reduce allergy sensitivity, help skin, and improve athletic performance, among other things. Contact Simply Slim Medical to schedule your consultation today! Our team would love to discuss vitamin D injections with you further. We are conveniently located in Bethesda, MD and Falls Church, VA.
